The Unforced Rhythms of Grace (2)
Bij Matthijs een mooi verhaal gelezen, waarin hij (onder meer) terugkomt op het verschil tussen "zijn" en "doen". God's genade, die ons willen laten "zijn" en onze eigen natuur die ons vooral willen laten "doen".
Toevallig (yeah right...) komt dit ook terug in het boek wat ik momenteel lees, The Ragamuffin Gospel van Brennan Manning (zie wat eerdere posts hierover: 1 en 2). Geniet mee van het volgende citaat (wat overigens weer niet van hemzelf is, maar van een andere schrijver die in TRG wordt aangehaald):
Grace means that in the middle of our struggle the referee blows the whistle and announces the end of the game. We are declared winners and sent to the showers. It's over for all huffing, puffing piety to earn God's favor; it's over for all sweat-soaked straining to secure self-worth; it's the end of all competitive scrambling to get ahead of others in the game. Grace means that God is in our side and thus we are victors regardless of how well we have played the game. We might as well head for the showers and the champagne celebration.

Je kent vast (of niet) het verhaal van de welgestelde jongeman die bij Jezus komt met de vraag wat hij moet doen om eeuwig leven te krijgen. Als Jezus uit legt hoe dat werkt en wat daar allemaal bij komt kijken, vragen zijn discipelen zich wanhopig af of er ooit iemand zal zijn die enige kans heeft om dat voor elkaar te krijgen. Lees mee:
The disciples were staggered. "Then who has any chance at all?"
Jesus looked hard at them and said, "No chance at all if you think you can pull it off yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it."
Dus, hou maar op met "try to pull it off yourself", en begin met "trust God to do it".
